I have visited churches in Central America with a range of 12 to 100,000 members, Almost all are plants, established within the last 20 years. Mainline mission churches from the CRC and others just don’t do well down here. They struggle along, capture ex-pats and cater to the intellectually elite. Most of the flourishing churches here are independent, highly localized, focused on justice and community transformation (Security, Education, Anti-Domestic Violence, Government Corruption) as well as evangelism. The call to follow Jesus in the communities is very bold and it includes faith and action.
Most of the leaders are indigenous.
As I think about our next stages of church planting, I have a strong desire to see us plant some indigenous local churches that strive to include the marginalized, particularly immigrant populations.
