Model Ministry

Often when we talk about how we do ministry, we focus on doing it “the right way”. It is important to be excellent in ministry–God deserves our best! But, at the same time, sometimes I think we focus more on the organizational model and having the right programs, rather than what kind of life and faith we are modelling in our daily walk.

I love coffee and I love knowing that I can go to the Green Bean any day of the week and get a great drink. But what I love most about the Green Bean is knowing that every day of the week Sanctuary and the Green Bean are modeling a kingdom approach to business and community.

For example, we recently hosted a cleaning night at the Green Bean. About 15 people turned out and we spent 3 hours cleaning out the Bean. We scrubbed walls and cupboards, swept floors, scoured Adirondack chairs, and mopped the entire shop. We ministered to the Greenwood community and our Green Bean staff by showing our care for the space. One of the most exciting things that happened that night was having a member of the Greenwood community, and a regular at the Bean, join us in the cleaning. By being at the Green Bean that night, he experienced a group of Christians living out their call to serve others.

Sometimes the right way to do ministry has to do with proper organizational charts or well-written charters. Sometimes the right way to do ministry simply means picking up a Lysol wipe and scrubbing crayon markings off a wall.

I want to encourage you to look at your life, the daily ins and outs of it, and find the ways that God is calling you to model Christ in your walk.
